What is a D&C?
D&C stands for dilation and curettage and it refers to procedure in which a woman’s cervix is dilated, using either medication or specialized instruments, and a curette scoops out tissue in the uterus. The purpose of this procedure is to either diagnose or treat conditions.
You may undergo a diagnostic D&C if you are experiencing abnormal bleeding or bleeding after menopause, or as a follow-up after abnormal cells are discovered during a pap smear. A sampling of tissue from the uterus will be taken and it will be sent to a lab to test for:
- Hormonal imbalances
- Uterine cancer
D&C for Treatment
Instead of just taking a sample of tissue, the tissue is completely removed from your uterus. The following are a few examples:
- Remove remaining tissue after a miscarriage or abortion
- Extract a molar pregnancy, which is when a tumor forms as a result of a nonviable pregnancy
- Remove excess placenta after delivering a baby
- Remove cervical or uterine polyps
This procedure is often done in tandem with a hysteroscopy so that your doctor can view the lining of your uterus on a screen and make note of any abnormal areas.
Risks & Common Side Effects
This procedure does not require any incisions or stitches, but you may experience cramping or light bleeding after it has been performed. You should expect to return to your normal activities within a day or two. Although rare, there is a risk of complications including damage to the cervix or perforation to the uterus, bladder, or blood vessels. Following your D&C, contact your doctor if you experience:
- Prolonged bleeding
- Tenderness in the abdomen
- Foul odor from vaginal discharge
