Permanent Birth Control

There may be specific reasons why becoming pregnant could pose a major health risk to a woman. Rock Hill GYN & OB provides contraceptive counseling and permanent birth control options to mitigate this risk. We encourage you to learn more about your options and to contact us at one of our locations in either Rock Hill or Fort Mill, SC, to schedule an appointment.

Permanent Birth Control through Tubal Ligation

A woman’s fallopian tubes carry an egg from the ovaries to the uterus. By blocking these tubes, where fertilization usually occurs, sperm is unable to reach the egg to fertilize it. Surgical tubal ligation which ties, cuts, or cauterizes the fallopian tubes can be performed. After recovery, you will still get your period and you will still need to protect against STDs by wearing a condom, specifically if you have multiple sexual partners. This surgery requires anesthesia and an incision will be made in your abdomen. Talk to your doctor about the risks associated with this procedure. You should only consider permanent birth control if you are certain you do not want to have children in the future. This is usually only recommended for women who are at risk for major medical complications as a result of becoming pregnant or who have a genetic disorder they do not want to pass on to a child.

Essure® Tubal Ligation

This procedure is no longer available. Essure® Tubal Ligation is a non-surgical procedure in which two small metal springs (micro-inserts) are inserted into the fallopian tubes. This causes scar tissue to form and permanently blocks off the tubes. If you have been using Essure to successfully prevent pregnancy you should continue to do so. If you have been using Essure and are experiencing long term pelvic pain or bleeding, or have become pregnant, reach out to us to receive the medical support you need.
