Nearly half of pregnancies are unplanned and while this can sometimes be a blessing, planning for a future pregnancy is the best way to achieve a healthy pregnancy along with a positive labor and delivery experience. The specialists at Rock Hill GYN & OB in Rock Hill and Fort Mill, SC, offer preconception counseling that sets you on the right track before you are actively trying to conceive.
What is Preconception Counseling?
This involves one or more medical appointments prior to trying to become pregnant. It is recommended that you schedule a preconception counseling appointment at least 3 months before you start trying to conceive. The intention of this appointment is to assess your overall health as well as your reproductive health.
During your visit, your weight and blood pressure will be recorded. Your doctor will conduct a physical exam to assess your heart, lungs, breasts, thyroid, abdomen. They will also perform a pelvic exam and pap smear. Certain blood work may be ordered along with lab tests to check for certain conditions.
Health Education & Promotion
After the physical portion of the visit takes place, the next step is to talk. We want to know what your family planning goals are and when you want to become pregnant. It is important that we learn about your medical history as well as that of your family. We will also ask about your current lifestyle and habits. From there we can engage in a discussion that enables you to understand how your health impacts the health of your pregnancy and your baby.
Risk Assessment & Intervention
During our discussion, we will note if there are any risk factors or lifestyle factors present such as:
- Drug use
- Weight issues
- Being behind on immunizations
- Certain medications
- Fertility concerns
From there, we will provide guidance on what needs to be changed or altered before you become pregnant. Again, all of this is with the goal of you being healthy, so your baby is healthy.
