Obstetrics/Gynecology

A career in obstetrics and gynecology can be rewarding as it allows doctors to bring new life into the world through their role in childbirth and actively participate in preventing and treating problems that involve women's health. Although obstetrics and gynecology are often interchangeable, these two specialties have some distinct differences.

What Does OBGYN Stand For?

An OBGYN, or obstetrician-gynecologist, is a trained professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating various women's health issues and associated disorders. Doctors often practice these two medical fields together, commonly called OBGYN, OB/GYN or OB-GYN.

What Is the Difference Between Obstetrics and Gynecology?

Obstetrics

Obstetrics is the branch of medicine specifically related to pregnant women's medical and surgical care. Obstetricians help maintain a woman's overall health during maternity, including pregnancy, labor, childbirth and postpartum.

Gynecology

Similarly, gynecology focuses on women's health with a focus on the diagnosis, treatment and care of a wide range of conditions that affect the female reproductive system, which includes sexually transmitted infections and chronic pain. Gynecology also deals with screening for and treating issues that affect women's breasts.

This branch of medicine is an overarching field from puberty through adulthood. One can be a gynecologist and not an obstetrician, though one cannot be an obstetrician without being a gynecologist.

What Are the Specialty Areas of OBGYN?

OBGYNs work across a wide range of services, but some may choose to focus on a specific aspect of the field that requires further training, expertise and accreditation, such as:

  • Maternal-fetal medicine specialists – are doctors who care for and consult on patients with high-risk pregnancies
  • Reproductive endocrinologists – are doctors capable of managing complex problems related to reproductive endocrinology and infertility, including aspects of assisted reproduction, such as in vitro fertilization
  • Gynecologic oncologists – are doctors who specialize in treating cancer of the reproductive organs, such as ovarian and cervical cancer
  • Female pelvic specialists – are doctors who focus on injuries and disorders of the pelvic floor and related structures, which include incontinence and prolapse pelvic organs

When to See an OBGYN?

A woman goes through many biological changes and functions throughout her lifetime. When and what you see OBGYNs for may depend on your age, health and reproductive goals.

Most OBGYNs are generalists, which means they can perform a whole spectrum of services similar to a primary care doctor, including:

  • Provide birth control counseling and care
  • Put in or remove an intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Administer the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
  • Perform gynecology surgical services
  • Conduct pregnancy testing, diagnosis and referrals for services
  • Administer rapid human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing
  • Offer sexuality/reproductive health education and adolescent sexual health counseling (including for kids and teens with special needs)

Some of the conditions that may require a trip to an OBGYN include the following:

  • Early puberty or delayed puberty
  • Eating disorders
  • Gender and sexuality concerns
  • Menstrual problems (irregular, absent, painful or heavy periods)
  • Ovarian cysts and pelvic masses
  • Yeast infections
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Pregnancy
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Vaginal or uterine abnormalities
